Just thought I would share this with you guys as it was from this site I got the idea.
On the 7th February this year I booked an assessment day with the Royal Photographic Society to sit for my Licentiateship (for more info on what this is go here http://www.rps.org/distinctions-introduction) without really having any idea of what I was going to do it on but figured if I didn’t book it I never would.
The date I had for sitting the assessment was the 13th June 2012 which gave me 126 days. Sounds a lot but it isn’t.
For the LRPS you have to submit a panel of 10 photographs (digital, slides or prints) or a book of 20 images which are technically correct and show your understanding and mastership of you camera….there’s more but if you want the indepth version go to the RPS website and download their distinctions handbook.
So I was going through ideas on what I could base my panel on and not coming up with much and as I was trawling the internet looking through stuff and ended up on here as I usually do…….then it hit me!
An urbex panel
So I started to go through all my old images and in my head applying the rules of composition and lighting to them and found that I had a pretty good selection of different bits and pieces which I hoped would make a good panel.
By this point I was into March and had already wasted about 20 days worth of time so I quickly set about digging out archived pics and I came up with a selection of 16 pics which I considered to be pretty good. So I got these printed as 10×8′s and spent the next 2 with the pics on a table just rearranging them every now and then to see if I could get the flow I wanted.
So I eventually got it down to 10 pictures I was kind of happy with and ordered the final 14×11 prints from Loxleys in Glasgow. Bought the mount board and set about mounting all of the images.
Brilliant with 4 weeks to go I had my panel sorted and I was pretty happy with it…..so I thought. One image kept bugging me as it didn’t fit but I figured it would be good enough to get away with…..until I went on a trip with Timster, Ratters, Wiffsmiff23 & tdotcom to an old abandoned farmhouse and there I found it. The missing shot.
So with no further ado I ordered the image I wanted from Loxleys and my panel was complete.
The day arrived and it was over to Fenton House in Bath for my assessment. Nervous but hopeful I would pass. There were some stunning photos but more panels failed than passed which made me more and more nervous. Up to lunch and about 6 panels from about 15 had passed and not a single full black and white panel to be seen…..seriously scared now.
After lunch a few more panels passed, few more failed and then they brought out my images and put them up on the viewing wall…..heart pounding by this point.
The judges got up to view them and spent what felt like a very long time looking at each image, picking them up and looking really closely at them.
One of the judges then gives their own personal opinion of the panel and she was very positive about the lighting, composition and printing of the images.
If the photographer has passed they ask "Is ‘insert name here’ in the room. If the panel has failed they just announce that the panel has not been successful.
The judges filled out their paperwork and handed it to the chairman who stood up, read through the reports and then asked if I was in the room. Relief, euphoria and a whole other host of feelings went through me.
I’d done it I had passed.
