The Square Mile – March 2012

This was done, to my knowledge, for the first time a week earlier by OliverGT and Ratfink. We’d had our eye on it a couple of weeks ago when we were out playing in the city all night, but it wasn’t yet ready. On this occasion though, the timing was perfect – I was visiting family in Essex so decided to hop on the train one night and go climb London.

I’d talked to Oli about doing this earlier in the week and he mentioned he’d be doing it again with a couple of others. "Excellent, see you at the top!" we thought. Come the night, come the climb, and 36 storeys plus later there were 9 of us on top of a crane with the best views over the square mile you can imagine. The Manc’s had come to play as well

In no particular order, the team was: Myself, my brother (UE virgin), OliGT, Dicky, AndrewB, Keitie, Tweek, Fishbrain, and Morse.

After messing around, a brief bit of catching up and sorting out a group shot, we checked the time and realised we needed to get down and head for our train. Leaving the others to their night, we climbed back down and went to wash the grease and dust from our hands before getting the Drunk Train back home.

A pretty good start to my crane climbing career, I think

Hamilton from 21 stories. The Stelco tower once headquarters to the infamous Canadian Steel maker is still occupied, in some of the lower floors, but upper floors that command a fantastic view of the city are long closed and abandoned.

I was actually surprised how easy it was to gain access to the roof of the Marriot Hotel, and that we weren’t questioned on our way through the lobby, we weren’t exactly dressed to kill. But we made it in and out.Downtown Louisville, KY.Pentax 645 – SM…
