Croatia. 2012. Motel Plitvice

Author Kingrat - Last updated: 18.05.2017

Motel Plitvice was built in the mid-eighties on route to the National Park Plitvice Lakes. At the beginning of the Yugoslav war it was occupied by Serbian rebels, then the UNPROFOR (United Nations Protection Force), after Operation Maslenica in 1993 it was used by the Croatian army until the end of the war. After the war a masonry contractor, bought the motel and surrounding land for 200,000 DEM from the Croatian Privatisation Fund. The rebuilding of the hotel did not happen as the main route to the hotel from Zadar was a bridge that was blown up during the war and was not replaced until 2004. The hotel still remains vacant and is currently up for sale for 2,600,000 Euros. Access was easy enough, communicating with the loon who lived in the grounds was not! Judging by his attire and the covert way he stalked then ambushed us we think he thought the war was still ongoing.

An abandoned theme park. Everything is still there and in good conditions:

Pretty well known beautiful luxury holiday resort, a prestige project from the early 70s, abandoned after the war.

Ordinarily we do our ‘sightseeing’ during the week. Security seem a little less ‘on the ball’, perhaps they’re not expecting visitors in the same way they are at a weekend.

When we explored this abandoned hotel we realised after a few minutes that the hotel had power.
