This combined heat and power plant was first planned as an explosives factory. Today it is mainly used for cultural events, but also produces some energy. So, it’s not completely abandoned…

We took the Upper Silesian narrow-gauge railway (Górnośląskie Koleje Wąskotorowe) from the main station to the station closest to the factory. You can see the train in the back with the long line of people walking to the factory.

Usually it is guarded by security, but some local people organized a trip. They did not expect that so many people would meet at the main station of Bytom. The tour around the factory included a guy presenting the history of the building. They also have a website http://www.ecszombierki.pl presenting possible future use of the building and current events (only in Polish). There is also a video of that day on this website http://www.ecszombierki.pl/wycieczki-imprezy.html

Ordinarily we do our ‘sightseeing’ during the week. Security seem a little less ‘on the ball’, perhaps they’re not expecting visitors in the same way they are at a weekend.

When we explored this abandoned hotel we realised after a few minutes that the hotel had power.

Again, limited information on this place. Last review on a trip website rated it as 4 stars in 2010. In 2016, it was decidedly less so!
