Bessingham Manor, North Norfolk

Author sophos9 - Last updated: 30.06.2010

Close to the tiny Village of Aldborough in Deepest Darkest North Norfolk lies an extremely Run Down Manor House Tucked away next to A cow Farm!!. Built in the late 1870s by the Spurrel Family they lived here until 1952 when they could not afford the Up Keep of what was an already Crumbling Building. A serious Roof Collapse and a Subsquent Bad Roof Repair was too much and the House now stands with its top two floors collapsed in on itself and leaving certain points of Urbex interest literally above themselves!!!! As you will see!!!!!!…

How sad to see the house go like this. I think there would have been a manor house before this one too as it was built in 1870. The spurrells
bought the land in the mid eighteenth century.

I am one of the directors of the company that now owns Bessingham Manor. Regretably one sdie effect of these pictures is that they have acted as a wonderful advert for items of value that have now bwwn stolen. Recently we lost two more fire places (pictures 20 & 30) to thieves, the police are now trying to locate these. It is a great shame as the house has now been ransacked and most of the other items of value/interest that we could have incorporated into the proposed new house are gone.

Please can I have your permission to print copies of your photos soley for the purpose of giving them to the police?

I must also stress that Bessingham Manor is private property and we have already issued a final warning to a persistant trespasser via the police, who are also including the property in their rounds. They have been informed that there should be no-one on site and to arrest anyone that they find.

We knew and visited the Gambles…many times were also at Mary’s funeral…its very sad to see the house in this state….they paided thousands of pounds to have the roof repaired and got ripped off every time….with bad jobs….
They had no children…. and R.E.Gamble was Bob not his son….the little teddy and dog Mary dressed in scapes of material when we used to visit with our daughter at the time she was 6-10 and we tried many times to get Bob to sell up after Mary’s death….he did not want to leave his wife…..The interest in the house and photographs are sad but amazing…

    dizzydream,

Thanks for the contact – we have done a more involved history of Bessingham here. Would be great if you could take a look. We are in touch with a potential buyer who will refurbish rather than demolish Bessingham.

Come to Poznan next time, we have lots of objekts”
We went to Poznan, spent 8 hours there then got bundled into various 4×4′s and driven north. There were moments during the road trip I was reminded of the opening scenes of Hostel and was certain at any moment we were going to be killed for our cash and cameras
