Beelitz Sanatorium

Author sophos9 - Last updated: 01.07.2010

So I finally got around to visiting Beelitz. Almost too late, as it seems, but more on that later.

For those who live under a rock, Beelitz was a sanatorium for consumptives built around 1900. Hitler was there, as was Honecker. After WWII it was used by the soviet forces as a military hospital, the largest one outside of the soviet union.
Since the soviets left in 1994, most of the buildings are left to decay. But it is far from abandoned. On weekends, hordes of photographers and tourists crowd the place. Even old people in wheelchairs (not used as a prop!) and walking on crutches seem to have the urge to visit the place… really weird!

We started of in sector C (one of four sectors on the Beelitz maps), the one where most buildings are boarded up. Reportedly there is security, but we didn’t see any. Also, although most of the buildings are boarded up, if you look closer you’ll still find an entrance. But the boards save the buildings from the worst vandalism, it seems…
One of our goals was to get into the bathhouse, and so we did

Still in sector C. Soup, anyone?

As sector C was only one of three we wanted to visit (one is in use again), we decided to move on after a short lunchbreak.

Corridor porn, sector D I think…

D was not much, but sector A would be even worse. This is where most of the photographers and tourists gather. It has the famous surgery with the famous lamp and bed… well, it *had*… some dumbass decided to move lamp and bed halfway cross the sector into some fucked up building… why?!?!

A crying shame! Not even a nice place…

at least, this slab won’t go anywhere – it’s cemented into the floor

The surgery was so trashed, this is the only picture I took there… sorry, no surgery rooms from me, just couldn’t do it

This depicts our mood after seeing the state of sector A…

So to conclude this, one can observe what happens to a place once it gets too popular: hordes of photographers and tourists, among them those fucktards whose only purpose in life seems to be to trash beautiful places
The difference between sector C – where everything is boarded up – and sector A – where everything is wide open – is that drastic.
If you haven’t been there yet, and still want to go, I can only advise you do so quickly, before there’s nothing left worth the visit…
