Dutch photographer and crazy explorer, Frits Vrielink – January 2012

Author Ms sophos9 - Last updated: 11.01.2012

Januarys Guest of the Month takes us over to Holland to interview a crazy seasoned explorer with a passion for powerplants. Let’s find out a little more about Canon shooter, Frits Vrielink……

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Frits Vrielink, 29yrs old and born and raised in Amsterdam, Holland.

I always loved to take pictures, but it got serious about 3yrs ago when I bought my first DSLR (a Canon 350D).

2. Which came first for you exploring or photography?

Photography came first, as I already was playing with my father’s SLR when I was at the age of 10. (Still got that SLR). I didn’t know anything about Urban Exploring until I saw this set of photos of an abandoned psychiatric hospital close to my home, of course I had to go there myself to take some shots. Since then I’m addicted to abandonments and try to go out exploring as much as possible.

3. What’s in your kit bag when you go exploring? If money was no option, what kit would you buy?

When I’m out exploring this is what my kit bag contains:

    Canon 5DMKII
Canon 50D (Not always, depends where I’m going)
    Canon 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM
    Canon 50mm f1/1.8
    Tokina 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 Fish-Eye AT-X 107
Canon Speedlite 580EXII (Not always, depends where I’m going)
    Giotto’s Tripod
    Led Lenser P7 (extra batteries)

Also my props are coming with me everywhere I go:

    3 masks
    1 gasmask
Fake blood (not always, depends on where I’m going)
Doctor Outfit (not always, depends on where I’m going)

If money was no option I probably still go with the Canon 5DMKII, I just love this machine!! However I would spend loads of money on Lenses:

    Canon EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM Fisheye
    Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 L USMII
    Canon TS-E 17mm f/4.0 L Tilt&Shift

I could name a few others but those I won’t use for UE..

4. How would your urbex friends describe you?

Probably something like….. crazy, addicted, Dutch, bald, freaky, dedicated, hardcore.

5. What’s your most memorable explore and why?

I think all my explores where memorable cause of the people who I’m exploring with. They become all great friends along the way and I love exploring with them!

6. Which location do you most want to visit and why?

I would love to visit:

    Battersea Powerstation
The Abandoned underground tunnels of Odessa
The Abandoned Railway Station St. James in Australia

Battersea Powerstation, because of my passion to Powerplants. The underground tunnels of Odessa and the Abandoned Railway station St. James, because I really love to go underground.

7. How did you develop your processing style and can you talk us through your workflow?

My processing style has developed along the years, as well as my photoshop skills. When I first started to postprocess my photos I didn’t know how to work with Photoshop. I learned a lot along the way through ‘how to’s on youtube and various photoshop tutorial websites.

My Workflow had some big changes the last 2 yrs as I started to learn more and more about postprocessing photos in photoshop. I start with downloading my photos to my laptop, after that I start the magic with Photomatix Pro where I try to get as close as possible to my final result. Most of the time I already know what I want to do with post processing a Photo. When I’m happy with the result I open the file with Photoshop and start working in layers on highlight, shadows and midtones. After this I’m usually satisfied, if not I’ll pull out some filters and stuff to get to the final result.

8.How would you next like to develop your style? Are there any other photographers that you find inspirational?

I don’t know how I would like to develop my style, I do know I’m still learning Photoshop and as long as I’m learning my style and workflow will change.

There are quite some photographers that I find inspirational….(Andre Govia, Sophos9, Mr. Monster…Etc.) However when I’m planning to visit a location I’m not looking at pictures of that location until I’ve been there…. Just to make sure I’ve got a fresh look on the location.

9.What is the urbex scene in Holland like?

I can be short about the urbex scene in Holland….. It sucks!!

We had a couple of good locations in Holland (Powerplant P, Psychiatric Hospital Santpoort, The Old Pottery, ML Hospital, St. Anna and Sanatorium B where the best locations in Holland in my opinion), but in Holland locations never last long and for that reason I don’t really like to hit locations in Holland. I’m more into travelling around Europe for some proper exploring…

10.What are your UE plans for 2012?

Not much yet to be honest. However there will be some epic meet ups with the TU Crew again this year!

11.Who would make up your ultimate crew?

It’s quite some list but here we go…

    1. Mr and Mr.s Monster
    2. Bas van Duijn
    3. Aimed.be
    4. Mr. and Ms Sophos9
    5. Critical Mass

    23. UrbexClown
    24. Delmor
    25. James Stokes

    27. Nikon Morris

12. Who would you like to see as the next guest of the month?

I would really love to see Nikon Morris to be our next guest of the month! He is a real hardcore explorer with a great style of photography and he gets into allot of cool locations lately!

Imagine if you did go in a group that had that many people in it. Queueing like crazy for shots, getting in the way. How the hell would security manage if they wanted to bust you.
