Exploring the Chemical Labs in Germany

Explored with Frits Vrielink, Bas van Duijn and Jeremy Gibbs – we were travelling to Berlin after shooting the NSA Radar station and Krampnitz, we had on our list two places, the Chemical Labs was one of them…

These labs were involved in many chemical experiments most noticeably the Biosynthetic Cause of inVivo Acquired Thermotolerance of Photosynthetic Light Reactions and Metabolic Responses of Chloroplasts to Heat Stress. The majority or experiments were on x-ray and photography film. VEB was later absorbed into Kodak GmbH.

It took some finding however with some trusted information being passed over we found it, although by the time we got in, it was pitch black outside – Exploration is exploration and part of this exploration we found something else – FKL6 Labs which was not far away – I managed to get a branch poke me in the eye leaving it bleeding with a weeks worth of black eye to come

We had to shoot the Chem Labs in the pitch black – I had brought along some portable lighting for testing, basically 10000k LED packs, they are very very blue but have an excellent smooth spread of light and can be placed anywhere to create lighting dynamics, these are easily white balance corrected so no problems with the high kelvin rating (blue light penetrates more than white)

  1. The blue gel you’re referring too is just some colored substance people brought in. They filled those recipients to serve a creepy model shoot, somewhere summer 2009.

On a sidenote: bang up job on this one. Very different view from this place!
    Hope the eye recovers well.

  2. Hey my friend, thanks for letting us know – there was also one which was filled with a red gel. Frits took a shot with the portable lighting behind and above, looks like an aliens egg.

Germany was good to us, amazing places and great explores. Thanks for the comments

  3. What kind of filter did you use for these photos? I love the effect. Great Shoot!

    • Hey man, thanks for the comment. No filters used, shot with lighting packs on a D300 with Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. Was a cool explore for sure :)

  4. Really nice shoots !

And a great location for urban exploration.

  5. Great set, kudos to you!

  6. Beyond splendid! Lucky you.
