Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 Ultra Wide for Nikon

So I’ve just purchased the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 from Hong Kong due to a complete stock out situation in the UK – amazingly, the lens was delivered in 3 days… Royal Mail, shame on you!

I shoot on a cropped Nikon body at a crop rate of 1.5x – this means I need ultra ultra wide to try and get the right effect on indoor urban exploration photos. Also shooting urbex usually means low light so a 2.8 straight through is a bit of a minimum for me.

When getting the lens, first impressions are totally WOW! Its build quality is amazing, really amazing – completely smooth action. I took the lens out and done some sample shots outdoors to get a feel for it. A corn field on a nice day seemed to be a good subject to test infinity

Heres the result:

Really impressed with it outside however preparing for an impending urbex visit to a abandoned derelict mental asylum I was really interested in indoor photos…

Grabbed a quick shot indoors:

Enjoyed that shot!

As for performance for urban exploration, a shoot out mission at a derelict asylum produced the best photos I’ve ever shot… The lens was spectacular, totally sharp!

I’m looking to negotiate price on multiple items, so should provide good savings and the Tokina 2 year international warranty is honoured by Kenro UK so no ‘grey’ issues here!

Another happy punter

  1. Some great shots here!

Kinda followed through from Flickr & TP, but will bookmark and try and keep up!

Very jealous of that 2.8. Not so jealous of the Nikon! ;)

  2. Thanks mate :)

The 2.8 is an awesome lens! Let me guess, you are on the other Canon side?

Should be upgrading the body soon enough…. to another Nikon :) ;)

  3. Did you have to pay any import tax, if so how much.
Any help would be much appreciated

    Thanks

  4. Would love to hear what presets or settings were used to develop those looks. Love it.

  5. Hi,i want to have the lens as well, but it is damn
expensive. When i look through ebay, shoppers from HK offer a very
low price. But may iknow, how you dealed with the VAT?How much?Since
i never bought anything from HK..thanks

  6. It’s indeed a good lens, just the green laser like flares are a bit annoying sometimes. The Sigma 10-20 i had before performed better in terms of focus speed and accuracy but the Tokina is much more sharper and the 2.8 is really useful sometimes.

  7. Just ordered this baby from eBay, still eagerly waiting for it!
Finaly I’ll be able to shoot ultra-wide in my crop DSLR. Judging from all the info in the forums and reviews over the web this lens will make a very worthy (if not better) companion/oponent to my 17-35 on my film camera!
